Use this workflow when you want &AI to generate a chart from sources that are already available in the project. Creating charts costs tokens. Common uses include:
creating an invalidity chart against prior art
creating an infringement chart against product evidence
creating a written-description style chart by charting the target patent against itself

Open the New Chart modal
Start on the project charts page for the target patent you want to analyze. Click New Chart to open the modal. The modal includes three starting points:
Existing for building a new chart from one or more existing charts
New for generating a chart from selected references
Upload for bringing in an existing invalidity chart PDF or DOCX file for review on PRO plans
For this workflow, switch to the New tab.
Choose the chart type
The New tab asks you to choose a chart type:
Invalidity for prior art charting
Infringement for product or evidence-of-use charting
The references you can choose from depend on that selection. If a chart type is unavailable, the project usually does not yet have usable references for that type of work.
Select the right references
After you choose the chart type, select one or more references from the available list. For invalidity work, the modal can use:
prior art documents already in the project
the target patent itself when self-charting is appropriate
For infringement work, the modal can use:
products that already have linked source documents
infringement documents already associated with the project
The reference picker may also show extra context, such as how many documents support a product or whether a source has already been used in other charts. That makes it easier to avoid incomplete or redundant selections.
If no references are available, add or finish processing the needed materials before continuing.
Configure the chart options
Before you create the chart, the New tab exposes several standard options:
Include Claims
Include Figures
Auto-Accept Citations
a results limit
Mode
These options shape how much material &AI considers and how it returns citations:
Include Claims lets the system use claim text as part of citation generation.
Include Figures lets the system use figures as potential support.
Auto-Accept Citations changes the initial review state of returned citations.
the results limit controls how many citation candidates to return per limitation.
Mode lets you balance speed, depth, and token usage.
Choose a claim construction set when needed
If the patent has more than one claim construction set, the chart modal also shows a Claim Construction Set selector. Use it when you want the chart to follow a specific set instead of always using the currently active one.
This is most useful when you are comparing alternate construction theories or preserving one set while charting against another. Confirm that selector before you submit because the selected set controls which construction-linked context the chart uses for that run.
Choose the right mode
Use a lighter mode when you want a quick first pass and a more intensive mode when accuracy and deeper reasoning matter more than speed.
Because chart creation consumes tokens, higher-effort runs usually have a greater usage impact than a lightweight exploratory pass. If you are still scoping the project, start with a faster option and move to a more thorough run only if the first results need improvement.
Submit the chart
When your references and options are ready, click the primary create action. The button label can reflect how many charts will be created, especially in infringement workflows where multiple selected products can trigger multiple charts.
After submission:
&AI starts chart generation against the selected sources
the modal closes after a successful start
the charting workflow continues in the background and the results appear in the charts workspace
The creation flow validates your selections before it runs. If required inputs are missing, you will see an error instead of a partial run.
Common situations
A chart type is unavailable
This usually means the project does not yet have usable references for that chart type. Add or finish processing the underlying documents or products, then open the modal again.
The reference list is empty
The modal only offers references that are available and not still being processed. Wait for source processing to finish, or add the missing evidence to the project first.
You need to review an existing chart instead
If the chart already exists and the goal is refinement rather than first-pass generation, open the existing chart and use citation review or the update workflow instead of creating a duplicate.
After the chart is created, open it to review the returned citations — approve or reject candidates, edit citation context, add annotations, and rerun the chart if the first pass needs refinement.
