Use this workflow when a chart already exists but the current citation set is not the version you want to keep. Recharting is the right step when you need &AI to search again, remove weak material, focus on specific limitations, or follow updated instructions.

This workflow is different from simple citation cleanup. If the problem is only formatting or a few obvious edits, review citations directly. If the chart needs a new evidence pass, use the update flow.

Start from an existing chart and trigger the update or rechart action. The update modal is where you tell &AI how broadly to rerun the chart and what should happen to existing citations.

Use a narrow scope when only one part of the chart needs work. Use a broad scope when the issue affects the chart globally, such as a weak first pass, the wrong search emphasis, or a major shift in theory.

Use the Instructions field to tell &AI what to change about the next pass, such as:

The clearer your instructions are, the easier it is to understand whether the rerun solved the problem or whether the chart needs a different set of sources.

The update modal exposes several options that determine how the rerun behaves:

These options let you control whether the update should search for new support, clear out parts of the existing citation set, and change how much evidence is returned.

Use them deliberately:

The update flow uses the same kind of mode selector as chart creation. Lighter reruns usually finish faster, while deeper reruns can take longer and consume more tokens.

If you are refining only a small problem area, start with a targeted rerun. If the entire chart is under-supported, broaden the scope and choose a more thorough run.

Once the claim scope, instructions, and options are set, submit the update. &AI then reruns the chart against the selected limitations and settings.

The modal validates your selections before submission. An update can be blocked if:

After submission, the modal closes and the refreshed chart continues processing in the background.

Use Remove Pending with Find New so the system clears unresolved material and searches again.

Use Remove Approved only when you intentionally want to replace prior accepted work. This is a bigger change and usually calls for a careful follow-up review.

Select just that limitation in the claims picker so the rerun stays targeted and easier to review afterward.

After the rerun completes, review the new citations inside the chart. Expect another review pass — update, review, annotate, and repeat until the chart has the right support.
