Search overview

Introduce &AI search modes and explain when to use each search workflow.

Written by Caleb Harris

Search helps you investigate one target patent through Search Agent threads that can return patent, non-patent literature, product, and clinical-trial candidates in one workspace.

Search costs tokens to run. Some search workflows, including NPL, Product, and Clinical Trials, require PRO access.

Use Search when you need to answer questions like:

  • What references should I review next?

  • Are there non-patent sources that map to these claim limitations?

  • Which products or clinical-trial records may matter for this patent?

  • Which results are worth adding into the project for charting or later analysis?

Start in the Search workspace

Open a project and go to Search. The Search page keeps project-wide search findings in Results and individual search conversations in Sessions so your team can review discoveries and reopen the underlying work later.

Click New search to open a draft search conversation in Andy. The draft does not create a saved Search session until you send the first message.

Once you send the first message, the conversation appears in Sessions and any reviewable findings it produces can also surface in Results.

If Search Agent is not enabled for your organization, the Search page will show that the workflow is unavailable and you will not be able to create new search threads.

Choose the workflow by prompt

Every search thread is guided by the prompt you send to the agent.

Use a prior-art prompt when you want patent references or published applications. Use an NPL prompt when the best evidence may be in papers, publications, or technical literature. Use a product prompt when you need specs, manuals, reviews, or other product-facing evidence. Use a clinical-trials prompt when the patent relates to life sciences, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices.

One thread can return multiple result types if that is helpful for the investigation.

Guide the search with the details that matter

A strong prompt usually says:

  • what kind of evidence you want

  • what date boundary matters

  • which claims, figures, or concepts matter most

  • any source, assignee, market, or product context that should guide the search

You can keep refining the same thread with follow-up prompts instead of starting over.

Review finalists and add them into the project

As Search Agent works, the thread records progress and finalists. Review each finalist, approve the ones you want to keep, reject the ones you do not want, and leave the rest pending if you want to compare them first.

When you are ready, use + Add Selected to bring approved results into the project. Patent, NPL, and clinical-trial finalists are added as project documents. Product finalists are added as project products and then routed into product processing.

Reuse and manage threads

Search threads stay on the Search page so your team can reopen the same work later, rename useful threads, filter active and archived work, and continue the same investigation instead of starting a duplicate search.
