Opportunities overview

Introduce the Opportunities workspace.

Written by Caleb Harris

Availability for recommendation features depends on your organization's subscription and setup.

The Opportunities workspace is where &AI surfaces newly filed patent litigation matters that may be worth pursuing. Instead of monitoring dockets manually, you can review incoming cases in one list, filter the list to the matters that fit your practice, inspect the intelligence &AI has gathered, and turn promising opportunities into active projects.

Use the Opportunities page when you want to answer questions like:

  • What new patent cases were filed that match our practice?

  • Which matters should I prioritize, dismiss, or revisit later?

  • Which cases appear to be a strong fit for me or for other attorneys on my team?

  • Which opportunities are ready to become projects?

Workspace layout

The main Opportunities page is a table-driven workspace. Each row represents one opportunity, and the table is designed for fast triage rather than deep case review. The page supports sorting, paging, column visibility controls, and a search field so you can move quickly through a large queue.

The workspace can include:

  • a search box for finding opportunities by party or case terms

  • filter controls for status, court, plaintiff firm, defendant firm, judge, company name, conflict status, and LinkedIn connections

  • a columns control so you can hide or show supporting table columns

  • row actions and bulk actions once you select one or more opportunities

  • an Add Opportunities menu for creating new opportunities manually

  • a settings shortcut that takes you to opportunity-related preferences

If your organization does not have access to recommendations, you can still use the workspace, but recommendation-heavy areas may show a subscription notice instead of full analysis.

Opportunity status lifecycle

Each opportunity can move through a simple lifecycle:

  • Discovered means &AI found the matter and it is ready for review.

  • Important means you or your team marked the opportunity as worth attention.

  • Converted means the opportunity is already linked to a project or has already become project work.

  • Dismissed means the opportunity has been intentionally hidden from the main working set.

Use these states to keep the list focused. Mark high-value opportunities as important, dismiss low-value opportunities, and restore dismissed opportunities if you need to revisit them later.

Search, filter, and shape the table

The fastest way to work through a long list is to narrow the table before opening a detail page.

Use the search box when you know a party name, case name, or other identifying term. Search is intended for quick narrowing, not for editing the underlying data.

Use filters when you need a more controlled view. Common filters include:

  • opportunity status

  • court

  • plaintiff firm

  • defendant firm

  • judge

  • company name

  • conflict status

  • LinkedIn connection presence

Use the columns control when you want to declutter the list or expose more review context. The list view is designed to be configurable so different users can prioritize different signals during triage.

Add opportunities manually

Not every useful matter has to wait for the normal discovery cycle. The Add Opportunities button opens two ways to create work intentionally.

Add by identifier

Choose By Identifier when you already know which case you want &AI to analyze.

The Analyze Opportunity modal lets you submit either:

  • a Case number, paired with a selected court

  • a PACER URL

Once you submit the identifier, &AI starts a background analysis flow that creates the opportunity if the case is valid and not already in the system. This is the right option when someone on your team hears about a matter before it appears in the normal queue.

Add by date range

Choose By Date Range when you want &AI to backfill or discover opportunities over a defined time window.

The Discover Opportunities modal lets you set:

  • a required start date

  • an optional end date

  • a maximum case limit

After you submit the date range, &AI starts discovery in the background so you can monitor the run and review the new matters when they appear.

Use bulk actions to triage faster

Once you select one or more rows, the toolbar changes to show bulk actions that operate on the selected set.

Depending on the current statuses of the selected rows, you can:

  • create project work from eligible opportunities

  • mark opportunities as important

  • unmark opportunities as important

  • dismiss active opportunities

  • restore dismissed opportunities

  • export the selected opportunities

Some actions are intentionally conditional. For example, Create Project is disabled if the selected opportunities are already linked to projects or if none of them has patents in suit. That guardrail helps prevent wasted clicks and tells you why conversion is blocked.

Export opportunities to Excel

Use Export from the bulk-selection toolbar when you need to share or review selected opportunities outside &AI.

The export modal lets you choose which columns to include. When the export finishes, &AI generates a downloadable file. The export is selection-based, so you must choose at least one opportunity before opening the modal.

Configure recommendations before relying on them

Recommendations become more useful when your organization and attorney preferences are configured well. The Opportunities workspace can show a subscription notice when recommendation content is unavailable, and it can also prompt users to complete recommendation settings if important setup is missing.

From settings, users can configure:

  • a practice overview describing expertise, preferred forums, and ideal matters

  • exclusion rules such as Schedule A, declaratory judgment, design patents, plant patents, ANDA or Hatch-Waxman matters, no-complaint matters (including matters where a complaint entry exists but the complaint document is still unavailable), and cases where defense counsel is already named

  • plaintiff and defendant lists used to prioritize or suppress certain companies

  • the fields included in generated conflicts-check emails

These settings materially affect the quality of recommendations and which matters stay visible in the working list, so they should be configured early.

Open a row when you are ready for deeper review

The list workspace is optimized for triage, but detailed evaluation happens on the opportunity detail page. Click any row to open the full detail view, where you can review:

  • case overview and complaint context

  • recommendation summaries for you and your team

  • plaintiff, defendant, and counsel details

  • relevant cases and LinkedIn connections

  • patent, product, and infringement-chart context

  • project-conversion actions

If you are still deciding whether a case is worth deeper review, start in the table. If you already know the case is promising, open the detail page and continue with the intelligence workflow.

Recommended triage workflow

For most teams, the Opportunities page works best as a repeating review loop:

  1. Open the workspace and narrow the list with search and filters.

  2. Mark obvious priorities as Important.

  3. Dismiss matters that are clearly out of scope.

  4. Open strong candidates in the detail page for recommendation and intelligence review.

  5. Convert ready opportunities into projects.

  6. Export selections when you need offline review or a shareable handoff.

This keeps the list actionable instead of turning into an unreviewed backlog.
