The best starting point in &AI depends on the material you already have and the result you need next. The fastest way to decide is to ask two questions: what is the most reliable document or identifier you have right now, and what do you need the project to produce first?
Start from a case when you already have litigation matter details
Choose the case workflow when the matter is already defined and you want to organize work around that case record. This is usually the right path when you already have a docket number, a complaint, or enough case information to enter the matter manually.
Create the project first from the Home workspace. Then use the case setup flow inside the project. In the current product, Add Case gives you three ways to start:

upload a complaint so &AI can parse the matter and start background processing
enter case details manually if you need an empty case record first

Start from an IPR petition when the PTAB proceeding defines the matter
Choose the IPR workflow when the PTAB proceeding is the organizing unit for the project. This is the better fit when the petition and challenged patent should drive the matter from the start, not a district court case record.
Create the project first, then use Add an IPR inside the project. In the current workflow, you enter a proceeding number in IPRYYYY-NNNNN format, and &AI uses that input to fetch the petition, PTAB documents, and challenged patent for background processing.

Start from the pitch workflow when the complaint should become business-development output
Choose the pitch workflow when your first real input is a complaint and the deliverable you need next is a pitch deck, a pitch-related draft, or both. This path is complaint-driven and is designed to coordinate search, charting, and output generation in one guided run.
This workflow starts inside the project on the Drafts page through New Pitch Deck, not through the standard case or IPR intake flow. You upload the complaint, set search and chart parameters, choose the deliverables, and let the job run in the background.

Use this rule when more than one path sounds possible
If you already know the litigation matter and want a general working project, start from the case workflow.
If the PTAB proceeding is the main anchor and the petition is the core record, start from the IPR workflow.
If the complaint is mainly a way to generate a pitch deck or related draft, start from the pitch workflow.
You are not locked in after the first step. Once the project exists, you can keep adding documents, run searches, build charts, and create drafts as the matter develops.
